Why You Should Walk Your Dog Daily -- Even If It's Only For Five Minutes!
The walk is the most effective way to get the message across to your dogs that YOU are the one in charge! Done properly, it can also give your dogs what they need to feel secure and be happy! Even if you walk only five minutes a day and never make it out of your driveway! In this video I explain why that is.

Are You Missing Opportunities To Train By Avoiding These Situations?

Mental tasks also require energy. Puzzles, new commands, etcetera. While walking a dog makes a mental image of all the smells it comes across. Such brain processing also requires energy.

The answer is way too much to go into for a comment here. My first choice would be to train him to not be reactive around other dogs. That may or may not be possible, but that is by far the best option if it is an option. Unfortunately, other than that your options are much more limited. Thanks for watching.

Apart from toilet breaks, I take mine twice a day (weather permitting), for about a 3 mile at his own pace sniffing walk through the local woods, to mentally tire him, followed by a 10 minute play of fetch, then a slow 10 minute walk back home for him to calm down

Really sad for an owner to have a dog that guests can't look at touch or pet. Essentially you come to visit and need to be nervous about my crazy family member. How about the owner recognizing he has a dangerous dog and keeping the dog separate from company or getting rid of it. Your advice on this issue is so impractical. Let's say your visitor is not a dog person and you suggest not looking at or petting your dog but give him a treat while you are looking at the wall. Get real.

My 2 pit mix dogs live and sleep indoors but want to hunt and pull like a freight train on the leash. We have turtles and rabbits on 5 acres, and neighbors have horses, ducks, chickens, other neighbors have small pugs (16) I'm in Florida and want to know how to "un-train" the dogs to hunt when we go out. I've ended up driving them out a couple miles to a desolate road and walk them there, random locations. Appreciate any advice - - BTW running these 2 dogs has cured my gout !!

    • @JaimieScott

I wish I had an easy fix for this one. I have the same issue with my pitbull mix, Jack. He has an insane amount of prey drive that he directs to rabbits and squirrels. I used to think that any dog behavior can be changed, but Jack is making me rethink that view. This prey drive is a pretty big part of who he is and he is not going to let it go easily. He is getting better around squirrels, but with rabbits he goes crazy!

    • @JaimieScott
      @JaimieScott Місяць тому

I still believe that it is possible to change ANY dog behavior, in theory. To change this behavior I would have to find some other outlet for this prey drive that Jack would really get into before trying to extinguish this rabbit chasing behavior. Maybe something like flyball or the like. It would be a lot of work!

"All aggression is fear-based"? That is a terrible generalization. I am working for over 20 years with dogs and had my fair share of leash reactivity and aggression. Some dogs simply like to fight like some humans like to fight MMA. There is zero fear in those dogs.

He has never given a dog training class or seminar (because he needs a script!). He has never done an interview with other (actual) dog trainers. Honestly I don't know how he sleeps at night. Dog daddy and Cesar Milan and so many other good actual dog trainers earned their following. ZG has and always will be (since his job at petsmart) just a spokesperson for the biggest names in the pet product industry. The worst part is that people actually watch him and since he never shows any real solutions, they relinquish their dogs. He is the most unethical shameless unscrupulous tool in the industry. If we are going to ban any tools lets start with the one causing the most harm, ZG!

Sorry to hear that. It's seldom the tool you choose, but rather how you use it that matters. In my experience prong collars save many dogs and owners from injury and they can absolutely be used in way that NEVER causes any distress or is the least bit cruel. I would NEVER do anything that could possibly hurt a dog. By NOT being open to using prong collars properly many dog owners cannot say the same as they put their dogs' safety at risk every time they walk. Best of luck to you.

Thank you! I have done exactly that with my reactive dogs. I don’t exactly yell but do the loud sit with the head halter so this was super insightful. To be fair I do that if the dogs suddenly react because they don’t always do this, and if we’re walking I just keep walking and they’ll typically corrects themselves within a few steps. You made me aware of it so I’ll change that. But they’re anatolians.good dogs, great with kids, don’t like surprises and will recognize anyone they’ve ever noticed too close to the property and never stop thinking the stranger danger intruder is worthy of keeping a focus on. Oddly my dogs are super friendly, we invested in training, walk twice each day, and do well in dog playgroups. But on the leash can be unpredictable so I actually avoid park trails and busy times.

Absolute tosh. Welsh terriers are a companion for life. They are just mis understood and need to be in the hands of the right people. If they are not for you, move on and let someone else enjoy them!

Went to China a few times…saw their “toilet” which is floor level latrine type and realized that this…being able to use it..squat…hold your balance…and yes eliminate…makes them a lot more flexible and…who knew…have longer lives. Makes sense.

Thank you! When we'd get a new puppy we'd even wipe the older dogs feet with dog wipes. We never wear shoes in the house anyway. We'd being the puppy to stores in the cart on a blanket like dog food stores home depot etc.

Zak your training puppies DD trains aggressive adult dogs and teaches them how to be calm.

I agree sir. DD is the bomb, and he doesn't need to be perfect, or right all the time. I like how he talks about training the owners, along with, and even more than the dogs. It's almost as if DD helps these dogs 'renegotiate' their traumas. Yes, those healings can be quick. Not always, but entirely possible. Humans have a lot to learn from how animals have the ability to come out of their traumas and pasts. I think people are jealous of him. Thanks for being an advocate for him. A lot seem to be against him. I am pro DD. Be well sir.

Dog Daddy has a calm confidence that many owners don't. I know the frustration a dog can cause an owner when they are aggressive. He teaches that calm confidence to the owners.

Also the price of dog food has exploded. A 25 pound bag for $50 use to be expensive. Now a poor quality kibble is $75 for 25lbs. I spend at least $100 for a quality bag (on sale) and it isn’t easy to find. I see my dog as a part of the family so no big deal but a young family with kids and the expenses associated might struggle to be able to buy two bags a month like I do.

Down/stay works for me off lead with my dogs. I challenge them to break the fixation and won’t release them until I have control. Problems only continue when the other owners release their dogs to “say hello “. (Hate that but never say anything)
